A 28-year-old British climber has died after falling about 60m (200ft) from one of the highest mountains in northern Spain. The fatal accident occurred on the eastern face of Torrecerredo, a peak that stands at an elevation of 2,650 metres within the Picos de Europa national park.
Local emergency services received an urgent distress call on Thursday afternoon indicating that a mountaineer had lost his footing while navigating a steep, rocky ridge.
The climber was reportedly located just 20 metres below the summit of the mountain when the slip occurr

A rescue helicopter was immediately dispatched to the area alongside a specialized mountain intervention unit from the Spanish Civil Guard.
Due to the treacherous terrain and high altitude, emergency responders had to be lowered down to the narrow ledge using a winch system.
A rescue doctor at the scene examined the mountaineer but confirmed he had already sustained fatal injuries from the impact of the fall.
The rescue team retrieved the body and flew it to a legal medicine institute in the city of Oviedo for a formal post-mortem examination.
Authorities confirmed that the victim was travelling with a companion, who is currently receiving support from local police officers following the incident.
The UK Foreign Office issued a statement confirming they are in contact with the Spanish authorities regarding the death of a British national.
Officials are providing consular assistance to the family during this time. Local mountaineering associations noted that while the route is popular during the summer months, the final stretch near the summit requires extreme caution due to loose shale and sheer vertical drops.
